Reflection 3

Session 5: How we do it

Designing the Learning for a Particular Purpose and Audience.

I have samples of two lessons that were designed for the level three and four students by the Construction group.

Construction: Build set up (see plan diagram)

Learning Outcomes: To be able to set up profiles for a simple building.

Level 4 students (had some prior learning L3)

Equipment (resources) – Tape, pegs, string line, tool kit, dumpy level, sledgehammer, dazzle, timber (profile), nails 3 and 4 inch

1. Hand out plan and site plan

2. Locate 4 corners of the building and dazzle them

3. Put profile around all corners, 500m away from corner

4. Given height using dumpy level Get FFL height

5. Nail on batter boards on inside of pegs

6. Get 2 parallel longitudinal lines above the dazzle peg in ground

7. Locate center line between 2 parallel lines put peg in

8. Using he geometry drawn from a previous lesson locate one end points

9. Run string lines to batter boards and get parallel lines for other end

10. Check all measurements are correct. Check for square using diagonal

11. Pack up and dismantle

Feedback, Self-evaluation, Reflections

Construction: Lesson on Area;

Students L2-L3

Learning Outcomes: students will be able to:

• Calculate area of a range of simple shapes

• Understand what area is and as it relates to building industry $cost Profit or Loss

Activities involved:

• Get students to draw on w/board 1m square

• Prior knowledge

• Estimation of meters  step them out

• Measure L and W of classroom and get area (tools required = measuring tape; resources = calculator/ruler)

• Introduce rectangle/triangle

• Revision = Q & A time

Session 6

Post-box activity

We were asked to think of issues in our class and possible strategies to manage them. Our group came up with the following:

• Students are noisy and are talking too much

• Asking too many unnecessary questions.

• Have a low attendance rate.

• Are academically not capable.

• Are not interested in the course.

A number of strategies were suggested to implement when managing them:

• Stopping teaching and looking at them.

• Direct the questions to them in order to engage them in the discussion.

• Ask the students to leave the classroom if they are too noisy and/or bullying other students.

• Refer them to the School management to be dealt with or to the respective Departments who manage the students.

This session was very good as it showed us that these issues were common in all our schools.
